Congratulations to the Middle School side - 2009 iYRA Champions

"The iRB and USA Rugby have worked collectively to ensure that safety is a top priority for the sport of rugby. Having been involved for over 15 years, I have been impressed with the level of coaching provided to the athletes who participate in this sport. Through this coaching, the athletes are taught the correct skillset to decrease the risk of injury as well as allowing them to play the game as it was meant to be played."

Frosh/Soph play in 2010
We have reached agreement with Naperville, St. Charles, Brother Rice and Mt. Carmel to form an Illinois Frosh/Soph division in 2010. We can now follow a more appropriate Varsity - Frosh/Soph model at the high school level to ensure the safest and most exciting competition.

Parent Committees
The BOD has formed the following committees: Social, Fields, Fund-Raising and Spiritwear. If any parent would like to serve on one of these committees, please let us know. Your assistance will allow the coaching staff to focus on player and team preparation.

Middle School News
An additional team in the Berwyn/Cicero area is in the works; a team from Wisconsin has been in discussions with iYRA about joining our league. In addition, the organization is looking at creating an Illinois select side team to compete at the annual Midwest Select Side Tournament in Elkhart.

High School News
Nick Niro earned selection onto the Illinois U-19 select side (aka, the Tornados), but could not play in the tournament due to injury. Mike Speck, Brian Pateras, Justin Lynk, Kevin Lydon, Andrew Collins and John Maevski all earned selection to the Tornados' U-17 and played in the tournament.

Recruiting
If you have successfully recruited a player for next year, please let Coach Bergman or Coach Pateras know ASAP so that we can include him on future communications.

Collegiate Play
USA Rugby is maintaining an updated document on it's website that includes collegiate rugby information. Students, parents and coaches can get information about academic, financial and scholarship opportunities for college rugby. Click here to go to the USA Rugby website. From the menu bar, click on Collegiate Clubs, then choose HS Player Info. Finally, click on the College Information for High School Players link to take you to the list.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2009 California Pizza Kitchen and Photo's Hot Dogs fundraisers. CPK management described it as "one of the most successful fundraisers that (they) have had at the Arlington Heights location."

Thank you parents and fans for your continued support. A special thanks to our 2009 sponsors: Athletico, ARO, the Northwest Woodsmen Rugby Club, K & L Contractors, the Chicago Grey Lions, Centennial Bindery, the Owens-Minor Company and the California Pizza Kitchen in Arlington Heights.

During the 2005 and 2006 seasons, ASRC participated in a nationwide study examining rates of injury in High School Rugby. The study was conducted at Ohio State University and the official report was issued by the United States Rugby Football Foundation.
